On the evening of September 24, I attended a poetry reading by Ken Babstock at the University of Calgary. Babstock is a Canadian poet, and according to the gentleman who introduced him, he is the most respected poet of his time, in this nation. A pretty specific title if you ask me.
Anyone trying to hold the interest of a group they are presenting to must be captivating, and poets are not exempt from this. I found Babstock to be very blasé in his readings. When he was introduced, it was pointed out that he had been out drinking the night before until the wee hours of the morning. I think that it definitely showed. He seemed detached from the poetry and uninterested in being there. I have never been to a poetry reading before, but I always imagined poets waving their arms emphatically and reading with passion, trying to be as dramatic as possible. Babstock lacked emotion when he read his poems, he didn’t move around the room in a craze, in fact he spent the whole time leaning......
