Bipolar Disorder is a severe mental illness that affects millions of people all over the world. Perhaps it seems more common in America because mental illness can be better treated in this country. Bipolar Disorder, also known as Manic Depression, is a brain disorder that causes extremes in a person’s mood, behavior, and overall ability to function on a daily basis. There are two different forms of Bipolar Disorder: Bipolar I and Bipolar II. Bipolar I is the more severe form of the illness which involves intense mood swings and depression. Bipolar II is a milder form of the illness and involves less extreme mood swings that coincide with depression. Among Bipolar I and Bipolar II are other milder forms of the disorder: Cyclothymic, Mixed Bipolar Disorder, and Rapid-cycling Bipolar Disorder.
