Galileo
Galileo was born on February 15, 1564 in Pisa, Italy. He was an Italian philosopher, astronomer, physicist and mathematician who made fundamental contributions to the sciences of motion, astronomy, and strength of materials and to the development of the scientific method and he was the first to use a refracting telescope to make important astronomical discoveries. In 1570 his family relocated to Florence.
He studied at the University of Pisa in 1581. There he became interested in the workings of science and concluded that the time in which a pendulum swings back and forth does not depend on the arc of the swing. In 1585 he left the university and started to give private lessons in the mathematical subjects in Florence and Siena. During this period he designed a new form of hydrostatic balance for weighing small quantities and wrote a short treatise, “The little Balance”.
