Being born without my left arm below the elbow could be devastating to parents if they see their child as "my poor child". Fortunately that was not the case when I was born in 1951 rural America. My mother never babied me or did things for me because of my difference. She treated me as a normal child. As for Dad, he left for the Army shortly after my birth and I never saw him again until I was 19 years old.
I walked at 7 months of age because I would fall to the left when I tried to crawl. I went to main-stream schools and always aspired to do things well. I guess you can say that I knew I didn't have two hands like the other kids, but I didn't seem to realize that something couldn't be accomplished. If the other kids could do it, so could I. I climbed the highest trees, rode the same bicycles, hit the same baseballs, and about everything else except maybe play the guitar or piano. But, I didn't have any interest in music anyway; so that didn't matter.
