My patient is MJ, a 66 year old married female, who presents to have a total thyroidectomy. She was accompanied today by her husband. I met her in the pre-operative area and found her to be awake, alert, and oriented but somewhat nervous about her procedure. Betty was her pre-op nurse and was performing her assessment when I arrived. MJ has Medicare and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of New Jersey insurance.
She is 5 ft, 5 inches tall and weighs 68.6 kg. She is allergic to sulfa which she says causes a rash. She has 35 pack year history of tobacco and drinks socially. Her past medical history is significant for hypertension, anxiety disorder (with tachycardia related to this), and hyperlipidemia. She also complains of pain and swelling in her fingers with no documentation of a cause.
