When Howard Zinn said, “Quietly, behind the headlines in battles and bombings, American diplomats and businessmen worked hard to make sure that when the war ended, American economic power would be second to none in the world” (413), in his book A People’s History of the United States, he was saying that during World War II the United States of America was worried about getting out of the great depression and staying out of it. Before WWII the United States was in the great depression. The stock market crashed October 29, 1929 which began the great depression. The depression lasted for ten years until we decided to join the allies in the war. During the time of depression the country was in despair. A loaf of bread was not even worth a barrel full of money. The paper money that people had was so useless they started to use them as toy or even wall paper.
