ESSAY ON THE SETTING AND CHARACTERISATION IN SIDDHARTHA IN CHAPTER 1: THE BRAHMINS SON
Siddhartha, by Herman Hesse is a story about a young, inquisitive individual named Siddhartha who has an urge to seek more knowledge and to go beyond ones eternal Self or Atman. He wants to attain what is called ‘Nirvana’ in Sanskrit which means ‘Enlightenment’.
The novel Siddhartha is set in a village located in India which comprises of the highest sect in the Indian society called the Brahmins. Siddhartha is one of the members of the Brahmins, hence the title of the first chapter, ‘The Brahmin’s Son.’ The village is close to a river where the Brahmins go to perform their daily ablutions. This is significant in the Brahmin life that is, to take holy ablutions to cleanse one’s self and washing away all the sins. The river symbolizes a kind of change, how the cycle of life changes, its transitoriness.
