1. (1) “Ladies and gentleman, rock and roll! (Mortimer).” This was the first ever said on MTV. Although MTV started with radical rock ideals, it has since switched. MTV’s image is self-contradictory. MTV maintains a major influence on teenagers; it addresses important ideas to the youth generation, such as recycling, safe sex, and global warming. However, the majority of the station’s television programming portrays stereotypical views, sexism, racism, and homophobia.
2. Part of MTV’s alteration occurred so it could fit into society. “It has long changed from being an entirely music brand into being a youth brand. It is no longer ‘music television, it’s ‘MTV’ (Mortimer).” Ruth Mortimer writes that unlike her generation, current children are “worried about getting the right job (Mortimer).” This does not explain why MTV’s programming has distorted to racy, sexually suggestive, and discriminatory imagery.
