The painting, Holiday in the Country, was completed in 1851 by John Frederick Kensett, (1816-1872) an American artist born in Cheshire Connecticut. The oil on canvas represents an array of artistic characteristics that can be evaluated in several different ways. The four most apparent features are subject, color, motion, and space arrangement. Kensett uses each characteristic effectively to convey his message to the audience.
Depicted in the 1950s, Kensett captures neighbors or country folk coming out of the woods to have a picnic or a get together with friends. The motion of the painting, is implying that they are getting ready to have a picnic and the country folk are bringing there baskets up to the house. Although attention is directed at the owner of the land and not the country folk it makes it easier to assume that he was expecting the company and is very glad to see them.
