Adapted by her husband, Robert Nemiroff, “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” is an attempt to tell the incredible story of Hansberry’s life. According to the program, the play “offers as full a picture as it can of who she was and what she wanted to pursue in her art.” The excerpts from her works included in the play help to convey her message about people and the many roles we all play. I believe that that all three elements of design--costume, lighting and set--effectively revealed the meaning of the play and the significance of Hansberry’s life.
