There are work life situations where the application of motivational concepts could improve the work environment, and productivity. There are situations where the applications of motivational concepts have adverse effects, and maybe no effect at all. This paper will attempt to show examples of these two thoughts, from some real work life experiences that I have either witnessed, or that I have been apart of. The motivational principle of discrepancy will be used to represent the application of motivation to the situation of organizational change, and how ineffective equilibrium can be in a situation of compensation differences between employees. Then the situation where the discrepancy theory is not applicable creates the need to develop new theoretical models to address the issue, and finally what the ramifications are if the new models are not developed.
