The colonies were quite dependent on the British for an overall economic stability. However, when the British started to impose taxes to recover from the debt of the French and Indian War, the colonies disregarded their past dependency on Britain for a high sense of just and righteous beliefs. Derived from nationalism and patriotism, the colonists were able to form a strong political leadership and guidance even in the midst of riotous behavior and social hardships.
George III was left to resolve the enormous debt as best as he could. The colonies were not required to pay all that was lost in war, even though the British fought for the defense of them. However, they were asked to “defray one-third of the cost”. (1) To receive this patronage, a series of taxes decreed upon them, starting with the Stamp Act. “The act levied a tax on all newspapers, legal documents, pamphlets, almanacs, playing cards and dice by requiring that they bear a stamp.”......
