I had just gone through a nasty divorce, and I had both my ex-wife and my family coming down on me hard because it had been my decision to leave. I needed to get away for a while to clear my head and think things through. All my thoughts were just a blur of emotions. I remember when I first drove into the little town of Elkins, WV. Talk about feeling out of place. It felt like one of those deserted streets you see in the movies. Most of the stores were boarded up down the one main street. The stop lights, all two of them, were flashing yellow. It was so quiet I could hear the crickets chirping and the sound of the passing river rolling gently around the edge of town.
