When al-Qaeda succeeded in destroying the Twin Towers, and extinguished several thousand lives in the process, our country was profoundly changed. People cried out for an increase in National Security. Americans wanted higher levels of protection for the ones they loved and also for their material possessions. Their reasoning was “If a place of government as strong as the pentagon can be bombed, who’s to say my son is safe at Disney world?” The state of military readiness was raised to defcon 3. The United States responded to the attacks by launching a War on Terrorism, invading Afghanistan to depose the Taliban, who had harbored al-Qaeda terrorists, and enacting the Patriot Act.
But when does government cross the line of civil liberties? The patriot act defines “domestic terrorism” as activities within the United States that involve acts dangerous to human life that appear to be intended: to intimidate or coerce a civilian population,......
