Elizabeth Dorothea Cole Bowen was born on June 7, 1899 in Dublin, Ireland. Her parents, Florence Colley Bowen and Henry Charles Cole Bowen, had no other children but didn't show their child much affection and hired people to take care of her. They didn't let her learn to read until the age of seven. Bowen stayed at Bowen's court, a estate deeded to her ancestor Colonel Bowen, and spent her winters in Dublin. Bowen was awkward and reluctant to talk about personal experiences and not much was known of her childhood until she started writing. This was caused by emotional traumas that happened to her between the ages of seven and thirteen. Her father had a mental breakdown when Bowen was seven, and after he was hospitalized the doctor suggested that Bowen and her mother go live in England. They settled on the Kent coast. When she was thirteen, her mother succumbed to cancer. After this she attended a girls' boarding school called Downe House and developed a stammer. She enjoyed Downe......
