Whitlam Dismissal and Sir John Kerr:
The Labor government had been out of Government since 1949. Under leader Gough Whitlam it won the 1972 election with the slogan ‘It’s Time.” However, it could not get supply passed through the Senate and in May 1974 was forced to a double dissolution lection, which it won.
The Whitlam Government introduced what ere seen by many as long-needed reforms. These included a National Health Insurance Scheme called Medibank. There was also more spending on areas such as arts, Aboriginal affairs and education. The Last troops in Vietnam were withdrawn, conscription ended and Communist China recognised.
The Whitlam Government faced major problems with the senat. Though is had a majority in the House of Representatives, it lacked one in the Senat. Thus, the senate could block or delay the government’s reform program. In 1974 it even blocked supply, which forced a double dissolution election.
