As United States citizens, many people take the rights guaranteed by our constitution for granted. These rights, however, were not always guaranteed to every citizen. Women had to fight adamantly for many of the rights that are now standard. Susan B. Anthony was a leader in the fight for women’s suffrage as well as many other rights.
The woman who would become one of the most prominent voices in the struggle for women’s rights, Susan Brownell Anthony, was born in Adams, Massachusetts on February 15, 1820 (Kendall). She was raised as a Quaker (Kendall 10). At 18, while attending the Moulsin’s Female Seminary, she was taught that in the eyes of God, women and men are equal (Gehard). From 1839- 1849 she was a teacher. By 1849, she was involved in abolition and temperance societies (Gehard).
