According to MSN Encarta (2009), cloning is a process of creating an exact copy of a single gene, cell, or organism. Scientists use cloning techniques in hopes to find practical applications that will produce advances in medicine, biological research, and industry. There are two types of cloning, therapeutic cloning and reproductive cloning, both have very different uses, which can help in curing cancer and aiding in the repopulation of endangered species. Cloning is also very controversial. Similar to the stem cell debate, cloning deals with live embryos that are harmed. The real dispute is the question of when live actually starts, is it when an embryo forms or when there is an offspring?
Therapeutic cloning is used to create stem cells that can be used to repair damaged or defective tissue in the parent of the cloned cells. Such stem cells could theoretically be used to grow replacement livers or hearts for transplant without fear of rejection. They might be used to create......
