It is not a surprise for me to know that the portrait “Age of Innocence”, one of Sir Joshua Reynolds’s paintings, has influenced Edith Wharton to name her book after it. It’s a painting of a preteen girl, sitting in her white dress with barefoot, her hands gathered on her chest. Well, honestly I wouldn’t think of a better themed picture myself, for the novel to be influenced from.

Many people who read the book and saw the portrait which influenced Wharton for using the same name would think that Wharton transformed the meaning of the word “age”. Many would be believe that Wharton’s “age’ in the name of “Age of Innocence” is referring to the time period the book’s story takes place at late 19 century, while Reynolds’s “age” is referring to the physical age of the girl in the picture. Many might believe that, but I don’t. I believe both Wharton’s and Reynolds’s “age” and “Age of Innocence” are referring to......
