Malcolm Little was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on May 19, 1925. A dropout from
school at 15, he was convicted of burglary and sent to prison in his twenty-first
year. There he was converted to the Nation of Islam (Black Muslims). When he
left prison in 1952, he dedicated himself to building the Black Muslims, and
adopted the name Malcolm X. He withdrew from that movement in March, 1964,
organizing first the Muslim Mosque, Inc., and later the non-religious
Organization of Afro-American Unity. He made two trips to Africa and the Middle
East during 1964. Three months after his return to the United States, he was
assassinated in New York on February 21, 1965. His own story of his life is
recounted in The Autobiography of Malcolm X (Grove Press, 1965).
This book is a selection of speeches by Malcolm X. All of them were made during
the last year of his life (except for the first selection, made shortly before his
departure from the Black Muslim movement). With that exception, it......
