The United States is the longest functioning democracy in the history of the world. The presidency of the United States of America is the most powerful position within this democracy and the most sought after. The Electoral College was put in place by our founding fathers so that states that are not as populated can have a say in whom the next president will become.
The history of the Electoral College is a very intriguing one. Our founding fathers considered several possible methods of selecting a president. Those ideas included to have congress choose the president, to have the state legislatures select the president, to have the president elected by popular vote, and finally to have a “committee of eleven” in the constitutional convention propose an indirect election through a college of electors (UnderDog p. 1).
