In my opinion, Ali is a much better parent than Baba. As I have been reading this story, I have noticed that Ali and Baba approach parenthood much differently. Ali makes Hassan and Amir happy by being there for them and just doing all that he can for them. He has no material goods to make them happy, so he makes them smile without the aid of money. Baba on the other hand, can just go out and buy the material goods to make them happy. He has the money, and in this case, money can buy happiness at times.
I’m not saying that Baba is a horrible parent, but he does not spend enough time with Amir. Whenever Amir wants to sit and talk, Baba always shuts him down. He is always “too busy” to show any affection at all towards Amir. For example, on page 31, when Amir had written the story and went to present it to Baba, he showed absolutely no interest. All he said was “Well that’s good, isn’t it?” The room went silent for what seemed like an eternity before Rahim Khan finally......
