In Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome, the main character undergoes a constant battle between his secret passions, and his responsibilities. Ethan is faced with many disappointments in his life. As a young man, aspiring for a career and attending college, he was suddenly forced to return home to Starkfield and tend the family farm. After his mother’s death, Ethan feels accountable to marry Zeena, who had nursed his mother. Zeena is constantly sick, unattractive, and bitter. Ethan lives a lonely, unhappy life until Zeena’s cousin, Mattie Silver, arrives on the farm. She has come to aid the Frome’s; by performing the tasks around the house that Zeena is unable to accomplish. Ethan quickly falls in love with Mattie, for she is young, lively, and beautiful, but he is faced with the biggest decision of his life. He desperately wants to leave Zeena and be with Mattie, but cannot bare the pressure of going through with it. Through constant second-guessing and even a failed suicide attempt......
