Space travel has advanced a long way since April 12, 1961, when Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was the first man into space. Everyone then started to dream of all the possibilities of the space adventure. When Valentina Vladimirovna Nikolayeva became the first woman in space on June 16, 1963, the hopes grew even larger. John F. Kennedy had one of the biggest dreams; make it into space by the end of 1960s. NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) then started Project Mercury, and get a piloted spacecraft to orbit the Earth.
On May 5, 1961 Alan B. Shepard became the first U.S citizen into space. In 1962, John Glenn became the first U.S. citizen to orbit the Earth. Project Gemini then started where two groups of astronauts met and connected. The final step to reach the moon was Project Apollo. On July 15, 1969 Neil Alden Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon, saying his famous words “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.
