Dim rooms with light cutting through blinds, deserted mansions where dust hangs in the air, rain-slicked streets with water still running in the gutters, moral corruption, devious two-timing women and crimes gone bad. This is film noir, an ideal blend of structure and content in which drenches the world in shadows and only scarce bursts of sunlight. Director and writer Billy Wilder is able to portray film noir in his masterpieces Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard. In both films an everyday normal man’s life changes when he randomly meets a mysterious and seductive woman, who traps him into a web of deceit, crime and corruption from which he can never disentangle himself. Both movies started off with a murder where the story is told through a flashback narration of the events leading up to it. The films are less concerned with crime than with the psychological investigation of the protagonist failed ideals.
