The genocide in Darfur is characterized by the Sudanese military and a militia group called the Janjaweed, made up of nomads, against an assortment of rebels. The Sudanese government, although publicly stating neutrality, actually supports the militia and the military by sending the Janjaweed supplies and the like. The fighting started in February of the year 2003, and it is still going on.
The fighting was caused by a myriad of factors: environmental disasters, political inequality, a too large population, and desertification, among many other things.
The victims in this case are the citizens, not each particular group, since they’re both killing each other. The government attacks leave many dead, military, Janjaweed, and rebels. However, the government is also imprisoning/jailing and later executing any and all other witnesses. Plus, evidence to the atrocities has been tampered with, as to hide the carnage.
The death toll is immense, around 300,000 dead and 2.5 million......
