How exciting is it to hear a child count to five for the first time? Now what if that child has Down syndrome and was never expected to count or live a semi independent life. If one pictures the Down syndrome student as the stereotypical “drooling idiot” one will more than likely have difficulty picturing such a child as teachable or even mainstreamed in the public school system. Children with Down syndrome are truly unique in their learning ability. An individual with Down syndrome may function within the mild to moderate level of mental handicap. Teaching strategies for a child with Down syndrome must be modeled just for that particular individual. Every child in the world deserves the best education, even if they have learning disabilities such as Down syndrome.
