One of the most brilliant individuals and military leaders of all time, Napoleon Bonaparte, was a dominating soldier and later the “master” of France. He was entirely ruthless and thought he would do no wrong. His military brightness did bring some order, stability, and solidarity to France, but a few costly mistakes along the way led to his downfall.
Napoleon Bonaparte was born on August 15, 1769 on the Mediterranean island of Corsica. He spent his childhood in Corsica until age nine, when his parents sent him to a military school of Brienne in northern France. At age 16, he finished school in Paris and became a lieutenant in the artillery at Valence. His military genius started to reveal itself when he was able to defend the delegates of the National Convention by greeting thousands of royalist rebels with a cannonade, leaving them in panic and confusion.
