There were four different articles on boys and communication. The first was a poem by Pat Parker and he wrote about being black and how you shouldn’t have to try to be his friend if you really want to be. I can relate to this poem, not in a context of race but in sexual orientation. In my own personal experience, people that I have called my friends have tried to relate to me through stereotypes that they think I might recognize and identify with as a gay woman. He writes, “you should be able to dig Aretha, but don’t play her every time I come over.” He is basically saying that just because he is black that doesn’t mean that he needs to be impressed by the music that’s been put on when he comes over to visit. The second article was by William Pollack and he was talking about how boys fail to communicate and actually put on a mask of masculinity when they are struggling.
