Just as the sweet apple turning itself red on the highest branch, on the highest of highest branches, the branch that the apple pickers forgot, no they did forget, they couldn’t reach it.

Poets for ages have been toying with syntax, orthography, and word choice, among other linguistic devices to create poetic effect. As a translator, one must keep this in mind to capture the subtle innuendo of a certain passage. Sappho’s fragment 105a is a exemplary instance of the necessity to look deeper into the author’s intent in how he/she constructed a passage.
First, a look at word choice is needed. Sappho 105a, as opposed to other selections of Sappho, involves five middle verbs. There is, perhaps, not a coincidence. “Oion to glukumalon EREUTHETAI akro ep’ usdo”. Sappho utilizes ‘ereuthetai’ (v. to become red), a middle passive verb, in lieu of ‘eruthron gignetai’ (to become red, adj. + verb). Sappho’s choice of a single middle verb......
