The army of ancient Macedonia is among the greatest military forces of the ancient world, credited with the latest innovations in military weapons and tactics. Philip II of Macedon created this amazing army and converted warfare to a new level. Before Philip, there was no army and definitely no warfare tactics. The warfare techniques and weapons, Philip put into place, had many different advantages to help the Macedonians during warfare.
When Philip first came into power, Macedonia had no army and majority of the people were farmers that were too poor to pay for army equipment. Philip first created a standing army and the long pike, sarissa. Philip replaced the Greek spear with his new invention, the sarissa, which was a 14-foot spear that allowed the phalangites to strike first blows against hoplites.
