Effects of progression to cigarette smoking on depressed mood in adolescents: evidence from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health
Abstract - This scholarly journal aims to investigate the relationship between smoking status and continuously distributed depressed mood among a cohort of adolescents. The researchers selected several groups of adolescents, some of whom had reported never having smoked a cigarette, and followed up with the groups of students one year later. The researchers wanted to determine a pattern between smoking on a regular basis (equal to or more than once a day for 30 consecutive days) and depression. Data was drawn from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, and was used to explore adolescent health-related behaviors. In order to measure the depressed mood, the researchers used the Centers for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. The subjects were aged about 15 and were of predominately European ancestry.
