London-based Ispat International (now Mittal Steel) and its founder Lakshmi Niwas Mittal recently became the world's biggest steel maker, and have been named by Forbes magazine as the world’s third richest man. He was following in the footsteps of his father, Mohan, who had set up the Ispat steel firm in the 1950s. Lakshmi Mittal is a workaholic 53-year-old Indian expatriate reckon. As the eldest son of Mohan Mittal, an entrepreneur from India’s famously hardworking Marwari merchant class who founded the Ispat industries steel group, Lakshmi Mittal was born with steel in his veins. At 19 he began working for his father and in 1976 he went to Indonesia to supervise Ispat first overseas venture, building a new steel plant there. In 1988 the young Mittal made his first independent move, leasing a money loosing state owned steel firm in Trinidad.
