The Affects of Social Context on Binge Drinking Amongst College Men and College Women
Binge drinking has been referred to as the consumption of large quantities of alcohol in a single drinking episode (Durkin, Wolfe, & Clark, 2005). To be more exact, binge drinking is defined as having 5 or more drinks (4 or more for women) on at least one occasion during the past 2 week. This phenomenon of binge drinking has found its way into the lives of college students and has caught the attention of the public. Johnston, O'Malley, and Bachman (2000) found evidence from national surveys such as Monitoring the Future indicates that rates of binge drinking is around 40% among college students (Clapp, Shillington, & Segars, 2000). This rate of binge drinking has remained relatively the same for the past twenty years (Jennison, 2004). This behavior of binge drinking has caught the attention of the public because of the major health concerns that are involved with binge drinking.
