“Do you think I’m lucky, Mother?” (446) Paul asks his mother in haste. D. H. Lawrence tells a story of a much misguided and confused family in an endless pursuit of happiness. Family that hides their hearts deep within their bank accounts and disguise their true character by chasing dollar signs and presenting a phony façade of material wealth. From the outside looking in, life appears peachy keen, stable, and very cushy. A large house with a live-in maid gives the illusion of prosperity, but they cannot afford to have their own car. In reality this illusion becomes a wedge between each of them and becomes an emotional stab in the back to Paul. The greed and misery of his parents slowly turning the knife in the wound. With the desire for money overshadowing their ability to love, they completely alienate Paul as he usually spends time with the lawns keeper, Bassett. Family dinners are filled with harsh silence and a kind of awkwardness that tingles in......
