My friends and I had talked about it for months, bantering back and forth as to who had the balls to do it, and who would back out at the last second. We all worked together pouring concrete slabs for housing developments, so the banter and needling was endless and ruthless, typical construction crew vulgarity applied.
There were five of us: Ock, an older guy in his fifties, who liked to drink too much and lived vicariously through his children. Little John, who was trying desperately to live the American dream with his wife and new baby, had just bought a house and his mortgage payments were killing him. Bobby; my closest friend on the crew, had acquired the nasty habit of hitting the crack pipe, and disappearing for days. Big E (the owner), constantly talked about “the old days” or started out his conversations with “Remember when..”.
