Alcoholism (Alcohol Dependence Syndrome) a disease wherein the person as a strong need or compulsion to consume alcohol, is unable to quit once he or she begins drinking, experiences a physical dependence, and has a need to increase the amount of alcohol to get “high” (high tolerance). Physical dependence occurs when the person experiences withdrawal after alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking. When drinking alcohol relieves the symptoms of withdrawal, the person has developed a true physical dependence on alcohol, and is considered an alcoholic. (Ignatavicius & Workman, 2006)
