Six weeks after the slaves took over Le Amistad they reach land. While the some of the slaves went ashore to get water an American ship comes and captures the slaves. They take them to a jail in Spain. The president in America at the time was Martin Van Buren. There was a total of 44 slaves on the ship and the main slave was Cinque. The slaves were accused of piracy and murder. In the first trial, John Forsyth, secretary of state petitions on behalf of the president for the slaves to be returned to Queen Isabella II of Spain. Two of the U.S. Naval officers claim the slaves, and two of the original crew members of Le Amistad claim the slaves as their property.
John Calhoun is afraid if the slaves are freed it could lead to civil war. The slaves have to go to three different courts, the last one being the Supreme Court, before the slaves are finally freed. In the last trial John Quincy Adams represents the slaves. The slaves were finally freed; they had the choice to go home to......
