After reading the article on Barbary Wars, I learned a lot, but I was also a little confused. The Barbary pirates would actually go across the Mediterranean Sea and would capture ships and take them captive. They would hold them until their country would agree to pay ransoms for their release. If they did not pay, the crews were sold into slavery. Thomas Jefferson did not like the idea of paying the Barbary Coast. He decided that it would be cheaper to build a navy than pay the Barbary Coast. Thomas Jefferson started a navy to fight the sultans. I think that Thomas Jefferson did what he thought was best for The United States. Shortly after Richard Dale arrived in Gibraltar, he was informed that Tripoli had declared war on the United States. He soon realized that Tripoli was much protected.
