Stuart Hall begins his essay telling us that there has been a shift from “European models of high culture” to “American mainstream popular culture”. This popular culture is composed of many different ethnicities and groups.
Hall comments on postmodern culture and points out that that its decentering of high culture and movement towards popular culture allows for certain cultures to have a more significant influence over the overall popular culture. This postmodern culture is one that generally embraces all types of differences such as those that deal with race and sex. Because of these differences, culture is ever changing and the influence varied groups have over culture are in constant fluctuation. Hall states that the dynamic nature of culture is a positive attribute because it leads to “production of new identities”, the empowerment of marginalized ethnicities, and it does not allow one group to dominate.
