The "Parable of the Sadhu" presents a complex situation where immediate action was necessary. A group of hikers discovered a Sadhu (Indian holy man). He was naked and barley alive when the hikers found him. The hikers were a group of mixed races and cultures. Each ethnic group did a little to help the Sadhu, but none assumed full responsibility. Their priority was in climbing the mountain rather than carrying Sadhu to the village below where other people could help him. We will discuss the ethical framework of the hikers and how group responsibility lessens the weight of personal accountability. We will also discuss how time pressure and goal orientation impact the decision making process.
