The Ars Nova: Defining a Century



For many centuries music was nothing more than background noise whose pure purpose was to exemplify God in the church. In the late 14th to 15th Century, however, music ‘came into its own’ as composers began to be allowed to freely express themselves in both their work and music notation resulting in the evolvement of many new rhythmic techniques. This seemingly risqué musical approach throughout 1310-1430 A.D. became known as the Ars Nova or the “New Art” of the 14th Century (Wold, Milo. An Outline History of Western Music. 8th ed. New York: WCB/McGraw-Hill, 1993. 27) and was primarily found in France and Italy. As time moved on and music cultivated out of the Ars Antiqua, composers altered the way they approached their music.
