Prosocial Behaviour
Prosocial behaviour is an act that benefits others, such as holding open doors and courteous towards others. Charitable giving and volunteering are also prosocial behaviour that is aimed to help others. These acts of kindness are defined as altruism; a selfless act that benefits others. However, the main area of focus of this essay is the emergency intervention; a concept of providing assistance to someone that is in urgent cituation, on the spot help, calling 999 is not included as it does not require direct involvement from the bystander.
The idea of emergency intervention was founded after the murder of Kitty Genovese (1964). As Genovese walked towards her apartment, in Queens, New York, she was grabbed, as she screamed several people in the near by apartments turned on their lights causing the predictor to flee. However, moments later he and stabbed Genovese in the back, as she screamed again neighbours put their lights on, once more the man left,......
