Sex: Gender Socialization
People differ in many ways, some of which are changeable, others less able to change. Sometimes it is hard to understand exactly what is meant by the term “gender”, and how it differs from the closely related term “sex”. "Sex” refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women.
Gender is commonly mistaken for sex, but means quite a different thing. It refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women (these roles may vary across culture). Society expects different attitudes and behaviours from men and women who socialize differently. Boys are raised to conform to the male gender role, and girls are raised to conform to the female gender or role. This "learning" happens by way of many different agents of socialization.
