There is a famous quote that “a cynic is a man who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing.” For parents today, the major issue in raising children is how to teach them to differentiate what is of value and what is not. In today’s youth culture television and technology have become the leading interests. The issue at hand comes down to whether children are empowered or seduced by the ever growing media and corporate world (Schor 2004). I believe it is evident that they are seduced, and with grave consequences. The media constantly stresses that life’s value lies in products and property. It is up to parents to create guidelines to dissuade children from thinking this way. Some could argue that this ingrained philosophy of acquisition is a positive attribute of our society due to the fact that it is a product of economic growth and progress. I believe, however, that it is not metal and plastic into which parents should teach children to place their faith......
