Social Constructionism is a philosophical approach of interpreting the world which claims that our entire reality does not naturally exist, but is socially constructed. The social constructionist position has been adopted by some psychologists who are concerned with defining identity and explaining why we have the identities we do. Advocates conclude that all ideas are socially produced, therefore there is no such thing as an innate individual identity; all identities are social.



In this essay I shall explain and explore some of the key premises of this perspective and argue that Social Constructionism has been used to further our understanding of the concept of identity by successfully challenging and offering a plausible alternative to the essentialist perspectives.
