The purpose of incarceration is to reform and rehabilitate those who have committed an offense, and who are considered a danger to society, to assist them to lead a law abiding and self supported life upon release. This paper looks to examine corrections as an effective tool in reducing crime and to what extent prison programming plays in reducing the chances of recidivism.
America’s first prison was built by the Quakers at the end of the eighteenth century. Their motives were altruistic – they sought a humane alternative to corporal punishment and capital punishment. The Quakers’ original intent was to rehabilitate inmates through hard work, bible study, and penitence. Today however, the Quakers’ goal of rehabilitation has been overshadowed by what some policy makers call more realistic goals – deterrence, retribution, and incapacitation (cliffnotes).
