Reconstruction of the US Army

The United States after the Civil War was in disarray. The south was totally destroyed and it was up to the north along with the army had to help reconstruct the south. The southern states relied totally on plantations and farming before the war. They had very little factories and were not very industrialized. The north however was very industrialized and they were growing in their techniques producing more and more goods faster and for cheaper. While the United States started to reconstruct the south, they had to take as look at their army. After the Civil War, many of those who fought for the north and south were done with their service and returned home. There were only 24,000 troops in the entire army in 1877 (American Military History, Volume II , pg. 308).
