Malaria is one of the oldest known diseases, caused by a parasite (it lives and feeds off another organism (a host)) called plasmodium that is transferred via mosquitoes. The parasite (it also belongs to the unicellular group protozoa) has four species that are responsible for malaria. The mosquito ingests blood containing sexual forms of the parasite. They reproduce inside the mosquito and are passed into humans when the insect bites (feeds).
