Growing up, I can recall certain cultural diversity moments that have shaped my diversity definition of today. My family background is of German and Irish heritage, small city, blue color workforce, with the exception of my grandfather who owned a successful retail fish business. My father worked at the steel plant and was an ex-marine, mom, stay at home worked at times at her father’s business when needed. Raised in a white, catholic, Irish neighborhood early in my life drew lines of cultural diversity. Both my parents had lived inner city urban neighborhoods, de-segregated schools and communities. Early, my parents wanted a different life for our family, away from the city life and diversity it presented. Up to about age 5, we lived within the city limits, full Irish working class neighborhood, not very diverse, until other ethnic backgrounds started to move into the area.
